Best Movies of 2008
Compiling my annual “best of” movie list was weird because I had no idea what I was going to list until I went through all the ticket stubs I saved. I had completely forgotten about many movies I really liked.
- No Country For Old Men
- The Darjeeling Limited
- Michael Clayton
- Superbad
- Hot Fuzz
- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
- Juno
- There Will Be Blood
- Gone Baby Gone
- I Am Legend
Honorable Mentions:
- Grindhouse: Planet Terror (and all the fake trailers)
- Live Free or Die Hard
- Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix
- Rescue Dawn
- Zodiac
- Ratatouille
- Bourne Ultimatum
Movies that Sucked
Shoot ‘Em Up gets the prize for suckiest suck-fest of the year. Dear lord was it bad. Still rather surprised I hated Tarantino’s half of Grindhouse so much. The car chases were fine and I’ll never forget that severed leg flopping all over the road, but that dialog was dreadful.
- Shoot ‘Em Up
- Ocean’s 13
- Transformers
- The Golden Compass
- Grindhouse: Death Proof
Movies I didn’t see
Last year I heavily revised my initial list after seeing a couple of amazing movies. This may happen again.
Didn’t see: American Gangster, Eastern Promises, Charlie Wilson’s War, Lars And The Real Girl, The Savages, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, I’m Not There, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Atonement, The Kite Runner, Away From Her, Across the Universe, La Vie en Rose, The Great Debaters, Into the Wild
Other movies I saw, and liked, but didn’t feel compelled to list anywhere:
Dan In Real Life, The Simpsons Movie, Breach, Zoo, Sweeney Todd, 28 Weeks Later
Though I will say that Zoo gets the prize for being one film I will never ever forget. That’s easy when a film includes the line, “And then the miniature horse started giving the stallion a blow job.”
My lists from past years: 2002, 2005, 2006.
Looking forward to 2008!
