Prometheus Trailer
God I hope this movie is great. Not just good. I want great. And I don’t think it’s asking too much. It can’t be overstated how Alien and Blade Runner are two of the best sci-fi movies of all time. No one has really ever come close. Most exciting for me is that Scott’s two sci-fi movies were hard science fiction, not fluffy action sci-fi. No one makes hard sci-fi, not...

Panning for Gold
I got to thinking recently. Why pay $10 or whatever a month for Spotify or Rdio1 when I’ve got 30GB of music on my hard drive that I never listen to? The problem is I open up iTunes, scan through the list of artists and think “I hate all this crap.” But here’s the trick: I don’t hate it all. I just forgot about all the good stuff. So I started an insane project. I...

No trombones →
This is my favorite kind of rant. It’s something I’ve never thought about before but John’s totally right. The childhood band situation sucks. I would love to know how to play the piano right now. Instead there’s a rusty saxophone in my parents’ garage. We didn’t know better when I was a kid but hopefully I can change that for my kids.

Steve Jobs
I felt silly sitting on my couch crying about a man I’ve never met. But he was a hero. And that’s what you do when heroes die. I’ve only been developing for iOS for two years but Steve Jobs has been an influence on me my entire life. Not just his products. His words always inspired me to want to do great things. He always reminded me the world was an amazing place. I just keep...

How to be a dick about the Red Sox collapse
If you’re a Yankees fan and feel the need to rub it in that the Sox engineered the worst collapse in baseball history (as if I were capable of feeling any worse about it) here are some pointers. Don’t Straw Man Me Yankees fans love to do this. LOVE. This is how it goes. They find some douche bag Sox sportswriter and quote him as if he speaks for Red Sox fans, then throw it in my...

Journal Entry
I’ve never written out my experiences from 9/11 so I thought I’d finally do that. I wasn’t in the towers or even downtown that day, so my story is not so crazy or anything. I don’t want to be dramatic about it, it was just my perspective on one day, but I felt like writing it out. My friends would probably find this the most interesting but here it is for everyone.

Anonymous Facebook Comment
Wow, what a fucking useless thing to say. Do these vapid gems just pop into your brain all the time or is today a special day? This is a comment I want to post to Facebook about once a day that I am instead posting on my blog because if I posted it to Facebook that would make me mean and I don’t consider myself a mean person. So here we are.

Final Cut Pro X
I’ve been following the insane Final Cut Pro X backlash since it’s release last week. I say insane only because I can’t recall a version of any software, let alone Final Cut Pro that was so controversial as to be late night joke worthy. What I keep thinking about when I read scathing, panicked reviews is this: What post production house rushes to upgrade to the latest software...

In-N-Out vs. Five Guys vs. Shake Shack: The First... →
Spoiler: Shake Shack wins. I’m getting in one last Shake Shake run before I officially move to LA. While I like Shake Shack, it’s worth pointing out in the context of this burger-off that if you want an In-N-Out burger on a random Tuesday you don’t have to wait in line behind 100 people.

'A really good place to find yourself a taco'
My parents, friends and cats have long been notified so it seems belated but here goes: I’m moving to Los Angeles in one month. I make movies so I’m moving closer to where most movies are made. It’s really that simple. The predominant reaction to the news has been excitement and encouragement. A few people have said something to the effect of, “I’m jealous, I...

The guys over at TinyGrab are running a clinic on how not to handle a crisis. (TinyGrab is a simple service that lets you instantly share screenshots). Ever since their product shit the bed I’ve been checking in on their blog to see what’s up. This gem: ‘Sorry.’ I’m hesitant to apologise for the dip in service. I want to be clear: I’ve done nothing wrong, and nor have our...

Makes perfect sense.
Today at 2pm is the first Red Sox/Yankees game of the season. I can’t watch it because I live in NY. Which makes perfect sense. I mean, why allow someone like me who shells out hundreds of dollars a year for live streaming MLB content to watch the games in the city I live in? I mean certainly don’t offer to charge me more to watch these games, even though I’d jump at the chance...

Brando
I’m finally getting around to reading that Paul Haggis Scientology article. Buried deep is this paragraph: Brolin says that he once witnessed John Travolta practicing Scientology. Brolin was at a dinner party in Los Angeles with Travolta and Marlon Brando. Brando arrived with a cut on his leg, and explained that he had injured himself while helping a stranded motorist on the Pacific...

Pros and Cons
Shawn: I mean, just my opinion. You could burn their houses down and I'd support you
Garrett: appreciated, and VERY GOOD TO KNOW
Shawn: After watching Dexter it's amazing what seems reasonable
Garrett: yeah, that show will do that to you
Shawn: Especially the binge we've been on. I'm really considering murder these days. Seems fun
Garrett: pretty much the only negative seems to be the constant threat of being caught.
Shawn: right exactly, otherwise it's so convenient
Garrett: which would wreak havoc on my stomach, i think. although getting to kill jerks makes up for it
Shawn: pros and cons

Aliens
I recently read James Cameron’s screenplay for Aliens which got me re-obsessed with the franchise in a way I haven’t been since I was 7. I found out a bunch of stuff I never knew. So am I the only one who never put together that Jenette Goldstein who played Private Vazquez was also John Connor’s foster mom in Terminator 2? Perhaps because she’s not actually hispanic...

Damn Herbal Tea
For no good reason I’ve decided to go on a little detox to start the new year. I’m cutting out caffeine, alcohol, fried food and most cheese. Not forever mind you, I’m not stupid. Just until. Um. Well, probably until the exact moment I crave one of those things. But it seems like a good idea. I’ve been addicted to caffeine since age 6 and developed the habit of having a...

Is It Time for an Oil Change in the Kitchen? →
We were surprised at how thoroughly heat obliterated the flavors in cooking oil until they all tasted more or less the same. Even prize-winning, and costly, extra-virgin olive oils lost much of what makes them special, though they retain their apparently healthful pungency. To get food with the green and fruity flavor of good olive oil, it seems more economical and effective to fry with an...
